“What’s wrong, Gennifer?”
Violet’s voice was gentle, soft as a morning mist drifting over a quiet lakeshore.
Gennifer felt a sting in her nose, her voice trembling. “Mom, I got hurt.”
“Hurt? What happened? Did you take care of it?”
Violet’s tone stayed gentle, but any hint of concern was absent—her voice as smooth and unruffled as ever.
Gennifer’s grip tightened around her phone, an uneasy ache rising in her chest.
Suddenly, she felt drained, her desire to continue this conversation evaporating.
“It’s nothing,” she muttered.
“If it’s nothing, then deal with it yourself. Ulysses!—oh, careful, don’t eat the peel, darling!” Violet’s voice abruptly sharpened, and Gennifer could hear her fussing as she pulled a piece of orange peel from Ulysses’s mouth, letting out a sigh of relief before scooping him up and half-chiding, half-coaxing him.
“I have to go, your brother needs to eat.”
With that, Violet hurriedly ended the call.
Beeps echoed in Gennifer’s ear as the line disconnected. She pressed her lips together, bitterness flooding her mouth.
Without warning, she jabbed the call button on the wall.
A nurse appeared quickly, glancing at the IV drip before approaching with a gentle smile. “Miss Gennifer, how are you feeling? Did you need something?”
Gennifer fixed her with a cold stare. “Do you have any idea what time it is? Where’s my dinner? Is this the level of service your hospital provides?”
The nurse’s face paled at Gennifer’s sudden change of mood. Her hands twisted nervously, all previous gentleness replaced by unease. She shifted from foot to foot, not quite sure where to look.
“Dinner for patients isn’t for another half hour, Miss Gennifer, but if you’re hungry, I’ll get something right away!”
She scurried off, nearly tripping over herself after another sharp look from Gennifer.
Gennifer’s chest heaved as she let out her frustration, feeling only marginally better.
Time crept on, dusk giving way to night.
In the deep quiet, everyone was lost in their own thoughts, schemes, and worries.
By the time the blackness of night began to fade into pale gray morning, the assistant Hanley had arranged was already waiting outside the offices of Apex Legal Partners, right on schedule to stand in for Gennifer.
Ruby had ushered the two elders and Pearl into her own car first, with Sylas already in the driver’s seat.
