Even though Ruby never talked about it, he always knew. Deep down, she longed for a real family—especially now that she had a child. It’s just that Frieda, blind to what mattered and always siding with outsiders, never deserved to be one of Ruby’s closest kin. Thankfully, at least for now, the Steele family still had their wits about them.
“Miss Ruby, if you’d please step out of the car.”
The assistant, who’d been leading the way, stopped the first car, walked over to Sylas’s vehicle, and bowed slightly at the window, his manner extra respectful.
Ruby got out and immediately turned to the backseat, carefully helping both elderly passengers out as well.
Pearl watched Ruby’s gentle gestures with open approval; the more she saw, the more satisfied she felt.
In the blink of an eye, Fanny and Hayley’s car pulled up behind them.
But as soon as they rolled down their windows, the assistant hurried over, apologizing, “Mr. Hanley gave strict orders—Miss Fanny and Miss Hayley aren’t allowed inside.”
He held out an arm, blocking Hayley just as she looked ready to charge forward.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Hayley demanded, her eyes wide with indignation.
Meeting her glare, the assistant broke into a nervous sweat but could only shake his head. “I’m sorry, miss, I’m just following orders. There’s nothing I can do.”
He could still remember the look of utter disgust and resistance on Mr. Hanley’s face when he’d mentioned these two.
Fanny had once been just an ordinary judge at the Quinborough District Court. After a sudden upheaval, she went from a dismissed court employee to a high-level executive, now wielding unimaginable authority. And that Hayley...
Hanley had frowned, hesitated for a long moment, then waved his hand dismissively: “Neither of them is allowed in!”
Snapping back to the present, the assistant bowed his head respectfully.
“If they can’t go in, what about us?” Pearl asked, arms crossed, studying the assistant with an amused look.
Only then did he dare lift his gaze, meeting a face etched with age but still strikingly beautiful.
The boss hadn’t given any other instructions...
“Um... I suppose I could go check...”
Ruby removed her sunglasses, tilting her chin ever so slightly; her entire presence was icy and unyielding. “If they can’t go in, then I’m not going either.”
“No matter what, you must bring Ruby inside.” The assistant immediately recalled Hanley’s repeated admonition.
He hesitated, looking over the group—a frail old man, an elderly woman, and a middle-aged lady. Surely, they wouldn’t cause any trouble.
