Attorney Langley lifted the will and began to read in a clear, measured voice: "The estate includes the family manor where all of you currently reside, a portion of The Grayson Group's stocks and funds, as well as the jewelry and other valuables left by Mrs. Grayson. As per her wishes, all of these are to be inherited by her granddaughter, Ruby."
He paused, then continued, "This is a letter Mrs. Grayson left for you, Miss Ruby. She began preparing these things for your trousseau long ago. In fact, the assets listed in the will even exceed what she described in her letter."
Attorney Langley withdrew a thick envelope from his inner pocket and passed it to Ruby.
The rough, brown paper brushed against the calluses of her palm, and for a moment, Ruby's numb heart surged with emotion. She looked down at the letter, her fingers curling around it tightly.
A letter from Grandma… She'd been preparing for this, for Ruby, all along.
Ruby always thought she'd grown impervious by now, but as she took the envelope, her eyes stung and quietly reddened.
Attorney Langley's voice rang out again, crisp and unwavering. Across the room, Gennifer's eyes widened in disbelief.
That old woman actually left all that to Ruby? Not just Grayson Group's shares, but even this manor under their feet?
Didn't that mean they could all be thrown out of the house at Ruby's whim?
Gennifer's hands clenched beneath her sleeves, her jaw tight with fury.
Sure, she was adopted, but she'd been brought up as a Grayson all the same. That old bat never liked her, but to leave her nothing at all?
Frieda, by contrast, hardly looked surprised. She'd always seen how her mother doted on Ruby.
But when she noticed Gennifer's reddened eyes, her heart gave a sharp pang.
"No," Frieda interrupted in a low, steely voice, turning to Attorney Langley. "I am Mrs. Grayson's only daughter, her direct heir. I contest this will."
"Yes, ma'am?" Attorney Langley closed the document, his demeanor polite but unwavering as he faced Frieda.
"This will includes assets that have since been renamed under the Grayson family," Frieda said coldly. "As the lady of the house and the current head's wife, my consent should be required. I do not agree to give these to Ruby. I demand they be transferred to my younger daughter, Gennifer."
Attorney Langley's expression shifted, caught between discomfort and scrutiny, as his gaze flickered to Ruby.
As Mrs. Grayson's attorney, he knew the family history well. Mr. Grayson had married into the Steele family, gradually earning Mrs. Grayson's trust and eventually taking over. Over the years, much of the Steele estate had been transferred into the Grayson name—including The Steele Group, which at some point had quietly become The Grayson Group.
But as far as he knew, Ruby was Mrs. Grayson's biological granddaughter. Why would Mrs. Grayson go so far as to disadvantage her own flesh and blood just to secure something for her adopted granddaughter?
Ruby met Attorney Langley's gaze, and in his eyes, she caught a fleeting glimmer of sympathy.
Her lips pressed into a hard line.
