She added with a cold sneer, her voice so faint it drifted through the room like a dandelion seed caught on the wind—barely there, yet impossible to ignore.
A flicker of discomfort passed over Frieda's face.
The truth was, it had been Ruby who'd come to her for advice all those years ago. But then Gennifer had taken the files from her, and so, well...
Her eyes darted nervously, betraying a flash of guilt.
Frieda had always known why the files had been leaked. She just never wanted to admit it...
"I'm your mother! And your sister didn't do it on purpose, either. You're so capable—why can't you help your own sister?"
"Help her? What, help her go to prison?"
"If you care about your sister so much, why not take her place behind bars? When you stood in court and lied for her, did you remember you're supposed to be a lawyer? Did you remember you're my daughter?"
Frieda's face flushed red. She knew she owed Ruby the truth, but stubborn pride wouldn't let her back down.
"It already happened, and you're the one who left the files at my place and forgot to take them. The loss wasn't entirely your sister's fault."
She pulled Gennifer close in a protective embrace and shot Ruby a frosty glare.
Ruby took a shaky step back. "Excuse me?"
"Shall I remind you? You asked me to keep the files in your safe. You said—"
"Ruby, only you and I know the code to the safe. Our family and the Veynes are tied together—if anything happened, Cassian wouldn't object. I've been the Veynes' legal counsel for years. Trust me, I'll keep your documents safe."
"I'll return them as soon as I'm done. I've been a lawyer longer than you, I know better than anyone how risky it is if these get out. Can't you trust your mother just once?"
That was the single, devastating mistake Ruby had made in her entire career as a lawyer.
It was the mistake that had dragged her into hell.
She should never have trusted her own mother—not even that once.
Their exchange, full of half-revealed truths and accusations, left Attorney Langley completely lost. He felt not only awkward, but as if he'd accidentally stumbled upon some deep family secret.
He shrank into himself, doing his best impression of a quail hoping not to be noticed.
