Attorney Langley was already regretting making the trip today.
He wiped the sweat from his brow, closed the folder, and realized he had no choice but to back down.
The outcome fell short of what Frieda had hoped for, but this temporary truce would have to do.
She nodded in reluctant agreement.
Without another word, Attorney Langley muttered, "I'll be in touch," then hurried out, eager to distance himself from the mess before it swallowed him whole.
Gennifer narrowed her eyes and planted herself behind Ruby.
"You can forget about getting a single cent of that old hag's inheritance," she whispered, her breath cold on Ruby's neck.
Ruby's face remained unreadable.
"I was there, you know. When she took her last breath."
At that, a hairline crack appeared in Ruby's icy facade.
So Gennifer had heard the will—she could vouch for its authenticity. But of course she'd never testify in Ruby's favor.
Sensing Ruby's reaction, Gennifer's eyes gleamed with excitement. "I stood outside the door. Even as she was dying, the old woman kept calling your name. Too bad you were rotting in prison then. She doted on you all her life—what good did it do her? Everything she left behind is mine now."
Anger welled up in Ruby, her chest heaving, eyes no longer cold but blazing, a volcano ready to erupt.
"You should've seen her. I wish I could show you what she looked like at the end. Wasn't she always so proud? In the end, she looked like a pitiful, wheezing old dog, gasping for air. Pathetic, really…"
"Gennifer!"
Ruby's eyes burned crimson as she swung her hand high, ready to slap Gennifer across the face.
How dare she! How dare she!
Across the room, Frieda was busy instructing someone to see Attorney Langley out. She couldn't hear their exchange, but when she saw Ruby raise her hand, her temples tightened. There was no time to intervene. "What are you doing? Gennifer, watch out!"
Ruby's hand sliced through the air so fast it sent Gennifer's hair flying. Gennifer's face turned ghostly pale.
She'd only been trying to provoke Ruby—she never thought Ruby would actually strike her.
Instinctively, Gennifer squeezed her eyes shut, bracing for pain that never came.
