The crowd around Benjamin shifted uneasily as a passerby caught sight of him and frowned with disbelief.

“Hey kid, you can’t just throw out claims like that,” the man muttered under his breath.

“Everyone knows Captain Carter’s been stationed at Everest for years now. Never once married,” another voice chimed in skeptically.

“Captain Carter is known as the ‘Guardian of Everest.’ Always kind, always helpful. He wouldn’t just abandon a wife and kid—or hit someone like that,” someone else added, shaking their head.

That was the thing — everyone knew Benjamin Carter as the kind-hearted man who’d never cause harm.

Years ago, Victoria Sterling had faced danger on a climb.

Benjamin had braved a fierce blizzard alone, the wind howling and lightning flashing all around him. He dug her out with his bare hands when she was hypothermic.

“But he really is my dad,” she whispered to herself.
