Everest's Guardian Hubby Watched Me Freeze My Ghost Knows Where He'll Burn novel Chapter 46

Chapter 5

My phone suddenly buzzed, lighting up the dark screen with a message from Sean.

“Emergency at work. Won’t be home for a few days. Be good.”

I stared at those last two words, “Be good,” and a bitter laugh escaped me, cold and hollow.

The very next morning, I made the appointment for the abortion. The sterile, chilly atmosphere of the operating room felt like a cold weight pressing down on me. When I finally stumbled out into the hallway, my legs barely held me upright—I had to lean heavily against the wall to keep from collapsing. Inside, my stomach was an empty void, and my heart felt just as barren.

Just then, my phone rang. It was Aunt Annie.

“Lanie, it’s all arranged. I’ll be at the airport to pick you up in a month,” she said cheerfully.

After that night, Sean never came back home.

He sent texts every few days, reminders to eat properly, to get enough rest. But in person? He was nowhere to be found.

Instead, I saw him everywhere on TV.

Sean and Charlotte appeared side by side at business conferences, both wearing bright smiles that made them look like the perfect team. They posed together at charity galas, the ideal power couple, flawless and untouchable.

Then, just three days before my scheduled departure, a photograph taken by a paparazzo exploded across every news outlet in the city.

In the picture, Sean and Charlotte were holding hands with a little girl, no older than five, as they walked out of an upscale private preschool.

That very evening, Sean and Charlotte held a joint press conference.

Under the harsh glare of countless camera flashes, Sean took Charlotte’s hand publicly for the first time.

He looked directly into the lenses and admitted, “Yes, we have a son together.”

Within minutes, the stock prices of both families soared.

“Lanie, let me explain. The Vanderbilts needed an heir. That was one of Charlotte’s conditions for the divorce. I know you’re hurt—you can yell at me, hit me, whatever you need—but please… please don’t leave. I can’t lose you.”

The desperation in his eyes seemed genuine, raw.

I softly patted his hand, trying to calm him.

“Relax. I’m just going away for a few days. The whole town is buzzing about Charlotte’s kid. I don’t want to stick around and be the subject of their gossip.”

Relief slowly spread across his face.

He lifted my hand to his lips, pressing a gentle kiss to my skin, his voice tender as he whispered, “Okay. I’ll take you to the airport tomorrow.”

At dawn, Sean drove me to the airport. Just before I stepped onto the plane, he slipped a diamond ring onto my finger.

I smiled at him one last time, then turned and walked toward the waiting aircraft.
