Chapter 8
I followed them closely to the hospital, refusing to leave Evelyn’s side for a moment. The sterile, cold atmosphere of the emergency room only heightened the sense of dread settling over me. Evelyn’s face was unnervingly pale, almost ghostly, except for the dark, dried blood crusted around her mouth—a stark, painful contrast that made my heart ache. Her entire body was marred by bruises, the deep purples and blacks telling a brutal story of Benjamin’s fists and knees. She looked utterly broken, as if the very life had been squeezed out of her.
When the doctor finally entered, holding the test results, there was no attempt to soften the harsh reality. His voice was sharp, laced with anger and disbelief.
“Soft tissue damage all over, blunt force trauma—clear signs of abuse. A fractured right arm as well. Are you her parent? What on earth is wrong with you?”
He turned his gaze toward Benjamin. “And these bruises—who inflicted them?”
Benjamin, who usually carried himself with an arrogant confidence, now seemed diminished, almost small and defeated. His head bowed low, guilt etched deeply into his expression.
“It’s my fault,” he admitted, voice trembling. “Work kept me away too much. I didn’t take care of her properly.”
His voice cracked, raw with regret. “When she got hurt, I thought she was lying—faking some emergency. So I hit her.”
“But I swear, I’ll do better. Please, just help her.”
The doctor’s face hardened. His eyes scanned Benjamin up and down, recognition dawning—this was the same man the news had dubbed the ‘Guardian of Everest.’ And yet here he was, his wife frozen to death while he brutalized his own daughter.
Disgust and contempt filled the doctor’s gaze as he turned away to examine Evelyn more closely.
“Can’t even protect your own family. What kind of ‘Guardian’ are you?” the doctor spat.
Benjamin’s complexion drained of color. He looked as if he might collapse right there.
Then, unexpectedly, Evelyn’s eyes fluttered open.
Benjamin hurried forward, panic flooding his voice. “Evelyn—are you okay? Does it hurt? Are you hungry? I’ll—”
The doctor turned back to Benjamin, who stood frozen in the doorway like a hollow shell.
“Severe trauma. You need to stay away for a while.”
Benjamin nodded silently, speechless.
The doctor left the room.
Suddenly, Benjamin’s phone rang.
“Border Police Station,” a voice answered.
“We found the climbing team. They’ve confirmed it—they deliberately abandoned Charlotte Grace and Evelyn Carter.”
