On Carey’s third birthday, Elaine Carter happened to have the day off and caught the earliest flight home.
It was Carlson Baker who picked her up at the airport.
They’d been together for just about three years now, and all those thoughts, back in the beginning, about maybe going their separate ways—well, that had never happened.
Not only had their relationship grown stronger, but Elaine’s career had also flourished.
The only thing that hadn’t changed was that their romance was still a secret. They’d never made their relationship public.
So even the airport pickup had to be done on the sly.
Once the car pulled out of the parking lot and it was safe, Elaine finally took off her mask and hat.
She opened her makeup compact, giving her hair and lipstick a quick touch-up.
Carlson glanced over, eyes full of affection. “You look gorgeous.”
Elaine caught his adoring look in the corner of her eye. Her lips curled in a sly smile. Still gazing in the mirror, she seemed suddenly amused and turned to him, curiosity in her voice. “How gorgeous?”
“Stunning enough to leave me speechless.”
Carlson didn’t even pause.
She rolled her eyes. He was only pretending to be tongue-tied; she was honestly at a loss for words.
Elaine shot him a knowing look and asked, cool and confident, “And where exactly have you been reading that?”
“Your fans write it all the time. You know, they’ve got great taste. If they don’t like something, they’ll say so, but when they do, they call you the most beautiful woman in the world.”
He gave a little self-satisfied shrug. “Of course, my taste is the best of all.”
Elaine snapped her compact shut.
She looked at him for a long moment before saying, “You really know how to flatter yourself, don’t you?”
“I’m just telling the truth.” Carlson arched an eyebrow. “Come on, admit it—don’t I have great taste?”
She couldn’t deny it, not even a little.
Elaine gave a soft, dismissive huff. “Still, it’s only because I’m worth it.”
