Elaine Carter noticed Adelina Lane’s prolonged silence and assumed her mother was still upset, maybe even unwilling to give her blessing. Elaine’s eyes flickered with worry, but when she looked up again, her gaze was resolute. “Mom, I really do want to be with him,” she said, her voice unwavering.
She had made her position clear.
Elaine had always been stubborn, even as a child—once she set her mind on something, nothing could change it.
Adelina Lane’s eyes swept over the two of them, taking in their joined hands and the determined look on both their faces.
She let out a short laugh. “Have I said I don’t approve? Why do you both look like you’ve just been sentenced?”
Elaine blinked in surprise. “You mean—you agree?”
Adelina gave a soft huff. “You’ve been secretly dating for two years. Do you really think my disapproval could keep you apart?”
Neither of them had an answer for that.
Adelina continued, “You’re not kids anymore. You both know your own minds, and you’ve clearly thought this through. Carlson, I’ve watched you grow up, and I know you’re a good man. Honestly, I feel relieved that you two are together. But—”
Her gaze shifted, landing squarely on Carlson Baker. She spoke with the gentle seriousness only a mother could muster. “I’m asking for just one thing: take good care of Elaine. That’s all I want.”
Carlson’s face broke into an irrepressible smile. He nodded solemnly. “You have my word, Adelina. Now that I’ve chosen Elaine, I’ll spend my life making her happy. I swear it.”
He raised three fingers in a solemn vow.
Adelina nodded, satisfied. “All right then, that’s settled. Have you told your mother yet?”
Carlson shook his head. “Not yet, but I’ll tell her when I get home tonight.”
Adelina waved her hand, signaling them to leave. “Go on, then.”
And with that, she turned and walked out first.
As Adelina’s figure disappeared down the hallway, Carlson turned to Elaine, a wide grin on his face. He bent down and pressed a quick kiss to her lips. “This is wonderful,” he whispered.
Elaine’s lips curled into a smile, but she quickly tugged Carlson toward the living room before he could kiss her again. “Come on, let’s go. Be more careful next time—Carey saw everything.”
