“Carey is so pretty,” Elaine Carter remarked with a smile.
A bright grin bloomed across Carey’s little face. She glanced at Olivia Bennett, then scampered over and stood beside her, suddenly bashful. “Mommy,” she said quietly.
Olivia looked down at her daughter, her lips curving into a gentle, loving smile. “And whose little princess are you, hmm? You look so beautiful today.”
“I’m yours,” Carey declared, throwing her arms around Olivia’s waist, still a little shy.
Olivia’s heart melted on the spot.
Elaine’s tone turned teasing as she chimed in, “Only your mom’s princess?”
Carey lifted her head. Noticing everyone’s eyes on her, she blinked, then her gaze sparkled with mischief. “I’m Daddy’s too… and Adelina’s, and Grandma’s, and Nana’s…”
She went around the room, naming everyone in the family.
Elaine burst out laughing. “Alright, you caught me. Carey, you’re adorable.”
With her big, sparkling eyes, Carey glanced at Elaine, then broke into a sweet giggle, joining in the laughter.
The whole family was basking in joy, warmth filling the room.
That’s when Carlson Baker spoke up. “Uncle Mason brought a present too. Carey, do you want to see?”
Carey turned to him and nodded earnestly. “Yes, please!”
Carlson didn’t tease her; he simply opened a box.
Inside was a set of toys, perfect for a little girl.
He didn’t usually buy presents for kids, but toys were a safe bet—especially since he’d asked Elaine for advice beforehand.
Elaine had assured him it was a good choice, so that’s what he’d picked.
Carey clearly loved it. “Thank you, Uncle Mason!” she said, her voice sweet as honey.
Carlson smiled. “You’re welcome, Carey. I’m glad you like it.”
He even softened his voice without realizing it, sounding nothing like his usual self.
