Back at the villa, Olivia Bennett set Carey down, and the little girl took off like a wild colt finally freed, darting away in a blur.
Just as she disappeared around the corner, Ethan Carter came down the stairs. Carey ran straight to him and threw her arms around his leg. “Daddy!”
Ethan’s face softened instantly. He scooped her up and asked, “Where did you run off to?”
“Carey went to find Adelina,” she announced proudly, eager to share her news. “Adelina bought Carey presents!”
Ethan carried her into the living room, settling onto the sofa with her in his lap. “Oh? Did she?”
Carey nodded so hard her ponytail bounced. “Yes! Lots of them!”
Out in the garden, Adelina Lane and Beatty had been sitting in the gazebo, but when the housekeeper mentioned that Elaine Carter was back, they came inside as well.
They walked in just in time to hear Carey’s excited chatter. Beatty’s curiosity was piqued. “What’s this about lots of presents?”
“Adelina bought Carey so many gifts!” Carey boasted, holding up her hand and wiggling all five fingers. “This many!”
Her sweet, high-pitched voice had all the adults smiling indulgently.
Adelina played along, her tone full of wonder. “Wow, just how many is that?” She tapped Carey’s little hand.
“That’s five!” Carey declared.
Adelina brushed a hand over her hair, grinning. “Carey’s such a clever girl.”
Carey beamed, sticking her chin up like a proud little swan. She bent down two fingers. “And this is three.”
Then she folded another. “This is two…”
Seeing that she was about to go through the entire counting routine, Olivia Bennett gently interrupted, “Aren’t you curious to see what Adelina got you?”
Carey froze mid-count, the previous topic instantly forgotten. She piped up, “Yes! I want to see!”
No one teased her any further.
After saying hello to the family, Elaine Carter exchanged a few warm words with Adelina, then pulled Carey close.
