From a Wrong Turn to Mr. Right novel Chapter 403

The others wore much the same expressions—caught off guard, at a loss for words.

Adelina Lane just chalked it up to childish innocence and smiled. “Carey already knows what marriage is, huh?”

Carey glanced between Elaine Carter and Carlson Baker, her big eyes as clear as glass. “Daddy said you can only kiss when you’re married. Daddy and Mommy got married, so Daddy keeps kissing Mommy. Uncle Mason kisses Adelina, so Uncle Mason and Adelina should get married too.”

Her words, though naive, were surprisingly logical.

Olivia Bennett, who had felt a bit awkward listening to the first part, all but forgot her discomfort by the end.

The others were no different.

Adelina Lane’s gaze sharpened as she looked at Carlson Baker and Elaine Carter, curiosity written all over her face.

Her stare was so direct that Carlson Baker grew visibly uneasy and cleared his throat.

Elaine Carter lowered her eyes, already piecing things together in her mind.

Carey must have seen them in the garage earlier.

When Carey peeked her head out afterward, Elaine had assumed the little girl hadn’t noticed anything.

No one knows a daughter better than her mother. Even without Elaine saying a word, Adelina Lane had already figured things out. Her voice was firm. “Well? Out with it.”

Elaine Carter took a deep breath, lifted her head, and met Adelina Lane’s gaze with a sheepish smile. “Since you already know, I won’t keep it a secret. Carlson and I are seeing each other.”

Adelina Lane looked genuinely surprised.

Worried that Adelina might blame Elaine, Carlson Baker quickly stood up, looking serious. “Adelina, please don’t blame her. I’m the one who wanted to be with her. If you’re upset, take it out on me.”

Adelina Lane pressed her lips together, not answering him. She turned to Elaine instead. “How long has this been going on?”

Elaine held up two fingers.

“Two months?” Adelina guessed.

Elaine corrected her gently. “Two years.”

Adelina Lane stared at her, momentarily speechless.

Two years—and she hadn’t noticed a thing.

Thinking back, it made sense. Their families were close; she’d always thought of Carlson as one of her own, and all the kids had grown up together. Seeing them together never raised any suspicion—it felt completely normal.
