The assistant caught on and started his update. “The company you asked me to look into, the one backing Horizon Collective… We traced it overseas. The controlling shareholder is someone called Rebecca Brain.”

“Brain?” Max echoed.

“Wait a minute,” Hunter jumped in. “Max, what exactly are you digging up?”

Max grinned. “I’m trying to take down Peter Clarkson’s company. Just when he was about to go under, some mystery player showed up and saved him. So I had my assistant dig around. It took some work, but we finally found something.”

“Hunter, are there any powerful families in the capital with the last name Brain?”

Hunter shook his head. “No, nothing like that. But do you remember? That woman our grandpa had an affair with—her last name was Brain, too. I think Grandma mentioned once that the mistress had an older sister.”

Max narrowed his eyes. “So, whoever’s helping Clarkson could be related. Maybe a descendant of that woman?”

Hunter gave a soft laugh. “It’s just a guess. We don’t know the details. Dad might, though. I remember Grandpa and Grandma nearly split up over it. Dad was the one who forced that woman to leave. She started a new life with her son, and Grandpa secretly helped them out a lot. Officially, they cut ties. I think she even passed away before Grandpa did. The only other thing I remember is Grandma saying the mistress had a sister who married abroad.”

Max looked pretty certain. “No matter who’s behind him, they’re nothing to me.”
