“As for what happens next, we’ll just take it as it comes.”
Max had always respected his wife’s choices. “Are you sure? You don’t blame him?”
“Sometimes the thought crosses my mind, and I do, a little. But he never knew what was going on, and after everything he’s been through, maybe this was just his own trial.”
“Don’t worry. I won’t breathe a word. Even if Juliana ever gets out, she won’t say anything either.”
That’s just how people are. Max knew she’d keep it to herself.
…
Peter Clarkson found Rebecca Brain. “Rebecca, thanks for always having my back. I can’t go through with your plans anymore.”
Rebecca’s eyebrows shot up. “Peter Clarkson, are you messing with me?”
“No, not at all. I’m just tired, Rebecca. The company’s size doesn’t matter to me anymore. I just want to spend time with my daughter now.” He let out a long sigh. “I’ve missed out on too much with her. From here on, I want to focus on my family.”
Rebecca jabbed a finger at him, her voice rising. “How did my sister ever end up with a spineless guy like you?”
Peter’s eyes narrowed. “Your sister? What are you talking about, Rebecca?”
She just looked at him, exasperated. “Whatever. If you want to keep wasting your life, that’s your business.”
The next day, Eleanor saw the headlines about Horizon Collective losing its investors and teetering on the edge of bankruptcy.
Inside, she felt nothing but calm. There was a time when she’d run herself ragged for Peter Clarkson and Horizon Collective, when that was her whole reason for pushing forward. Now, that company and that man had nothing to do with her anymore.
With a secret little smile, Eleanor slipped a letter she’d written three days ago into Max’s suit pocket. There were things she just couldn’t say out loud, but maybe a letter could carry those words for her.
Max was in a meeting. The room was a little too warm, so he took off his suit jacket. As he did, a pink envelope slipped out of his pocket and landed on the floor.
He paused, bent down, and picked it up. Everyone in the room went quiet, eyes on the pink envelope in his hand.
On the front, in neat handwriting, it said: For Max, a love letter.
