The police showed up just as Jessie Goff was sitting down to a fancy breakfast. Peter Clarkson was still at home, getting ready for his day. When two detectives in uniform knocked on the door with a search warrant, Peter froze.
“Officers, are you sure you’ve got the right address?”
Jessie’s face lost all color. She tried to hide behind Peter, her hands shaking.
“There’s no mistake. We received an anonymous tip connecting Jessie Goff to multiple murders, including Patrick Lee from Harborview and the sudden illness of your mother, Autumn.”
“My mother?” Peter stared at Jessie, disbelief written all over his face. “You did something to my mom?”
The officer continued. “According to your nanny, your mother’s blood pressure medication was switched for something else. Jessie was the only one with her when she collapsed.”
Peter looked at Jessie, like he didn’t recognize her anymore. “Why would you hurt my mom? She’s always treated you like her own daughter.”
Jessie kept shaking her head, tears welling up in her eyes. “Peter, I swear, I didn’t do it. Why would I? I’m pregnant with your baby.”
Peter’s voice was cold. “So being pregnant means you can do whatever you want?”
He couldn’t accept that he’d married someone so cruel. When Lisa realized there was no turning back, she finally spoke up. “Last night, when I was giving Olga a bath, I saw bruises under her arms and on her back.”
Peter’s anger flared. “You hurt Olga? She’s only four.”
At that moment, it didn’t matter how much Jessie begged or cried. The officers led her outside and into the car. Her legs gave out and she collapsed, darkness closing in as blood began to seep down her legs.
Peter’s heart stopped when he saw it.
When Jessie came to, she was in a hospital room guarded by police. A doctor stood over her, eyes full of sympathy. “I’m sorry. You got here too late. We couldn’t save the baby.”
Jessie stared at the doctor, refusing to believe it. “No, you’re lying. Where’s my baby? Where’s my husband? I want to see my husband!”
