Hearing those words, Leonard couldn’t help but feel a quiet happiness mingled with relief.
“To be honest… if it weren’t for my past relationship, if things hadn’t blown up the way they did, none of this would have happened. In the end, I dragged you into this mess.”
“I don’t care what other people believe about me. As long as you’re willing to accept it, that’s enough for me.”
Even during their argument earlier that day, Marguerite had been thinking about all of this—she couldn’t stop feeling guilty. But this was her unchangeable past; no matter how their lives changed from now on, what happened between her and Benjamin would always be a part of her story, something she could never erase.
“I don’t care about any of that,” Leonard said softly.
“I care about you—now and in the future. And I promise, I’ll never let something like this happen again. I’ll protect you, always.” His eyes were steady, his voice gentle.
Marguerite was taken aback for a moment. Sometimes it felt like their relationship was moving too fast—they barely knew each other, yet at moments she felt as if they’d known each other for years. The sensation was so confusing, she honestly didn’t know what to do with it.
When they got home, Leonard left her alone in the apartment and headed into the office to deal with work. He’d been staying with her at the old house these past few days, so plenty of things at work had piled up. Now that he was finally back, he needed to deal with everything quickly before it got out of hand.
