A gentle warmth spread through Marguerite’s heart. Even though he wasn’t home right now, he was still thinking of her.
She was genuinely touched.
“Thank you, Wilma.”
“There’s no need to thank me, ma’am. Mr. Murphy made it very clear that while he’s away, I’m to take good care of you. I’ve never seen him put so much care into anyone before. I can tell—he really does care about you!”
“Mr. Murphy may seem a little cold on the outside, but he’s actually incredibly considerate and has always been kind to people.”
Wilma had always thought highly of him, and her praise for him was sincere.
Marguerite nodded. “Thank you, Wilma.”
“Oh, and Wilma, you don’t need to prepare dinner for me tonight. I have a friend who’s invited me out. He’s helped me out a lot lately, and I want to thank him properly.”
“Don’t worry, ma’am. If there’s anything you want to eat, just let me know. And you never have to stand on ceremony with me.”
Marguerite smiled. “Thank you. I’ll let you know if I need anything.”
Wilma nodded. “Alright, ma’am.”
Marguerite reached out to Luke. After all, he’d done her a huge favor—she couldn’t just let that go without showing her gratitude.
They agreed to meet at a restaurant in half an hour.
When Marguerite arrived, Luke was already waiting for her inside.
“Luke, you didn’t go through all this trouble just to help me, did you? You really didn’t have to. I only asked for a little help because I ran into some difficulties—I never wanted to burden you.”
“Your company is huge now. Normally, there’s no way I’d get the chance to collaborate with you, so don’t feel you have to bend over backwards for me.”
Marguerite truly didn’t want to cause him any inconvenience or trouble.
Luke laughed. “Marguerite, when did you get so full of yourself? Don’t tell me that bump on the head messed with your brain after all?”
“I’m a businessman, you know. I’m not about to do anything that would hurt my company’s interests. The only reason I want to work with you is because I believe in your patent—and I think it has amazing potential.”
By the end, his smile had grown even wider. Even after all these years, conversation between them felt as natural as ever—never awkward, just easy and warm.
