Marguerite pressed her fingers to her temples in mock exasperation. “Luke, honestly, your mouth just gets sharper every year. You really haven’t changed a bit!”
He’d always been this way—seizing every opportunity to tease her, no matter the occasion.
Yet being around him had always felt so easy, like the weight of the world lifted for a while.
“Alright, that’s enough talk,” she said, waving him off with a half-smile. “I’ll have my team send over our proposal. Take a look when you get a chance. If it seems like a good fit, we’ll talk. If not, no hard feelings—I won’t twist your arm about it.”
Luke shrugged, utterly unfazed. “It’s just a business deal. No one’s forcing you into anything.”
His easygoing attitude made Marguerite feel lighter, reassured that he was genuinely interested in her work and not trying to pressure her.
Truth be told, she wasn’t desperate for new partners these days. Her patent still felt a bit raw, unfinished—plus, with everything that had happened lately, her priorities had shifted. Work had slid to the back burner, and with her engagement looming, her free time would only get scarcer. There simply wasn’t enough of her to go around.
“Alright, it’s settled then,” she said, her tone earnest. “If it works out, great. But I don’t want to trouble you.”
Luke nodded, accepting her words without protest, just as he always had.
“Marguerite, I’ve heard a bit about what you went through lately,” he said quietly. “Wanted to reach out, maybe offer some comfort, but I wasn’t sure if you’d want to hear from me—not after all this time.”
He hesitated, his expression softening. “Honestly, I thought about calling you a lot over the years, but I was worried I’d just be intruding.”
