It was the kind of situation that left Marguerite feeling utterly helpless.
She and Luke had been laughing over dinner, sharing easy conversation, when suddenly a familiar face caught her eye—one that was unmistakably headed straight for their table.
Leonard.
What on earth was he doing here tonight? And why did it have to be now, of all times?
Marguerite’s heart skipped a beat, and an inexplicable nervousness took hold of her.
“Le—Leonard? What are you doing here?” She stood up almost reflexively, her voice tight with surprise.
Just moments ago, she and Luke had been talking about him, and now here he was, standing right in front of them. It felt almost surreal.
“I have a business dinner,” Leonard replied coolly, his gaze flicking from Marguerite to Luke. He’d noticed how relaxed and happy she’d looked with this man—so different from the reserved demeanor she always wore around him.
It stung. Leonard couldn’t help but notice that Marguerite’s laughter tonight was genuine, the kind that lit up her face. When she was with him, it was never quite the same.
Marguerite hurried to introduce them, her words tumbling out. “Let me introduce you—this is my friend, Luke.”
She hesitated as she turned to Leonard, struggling to get the words out. For a moment, the words stuck in her throat, but then she forced herself to continue, “And this is… my fiancé, Leonard.”
Luke stood up in surprise, clearly taken aback. “Mr. Murphy—it’s been a while.”
He had never imagined that Leonard was the man Marguerite was engaged to.
