After Leonard left, only the two of them remained.
For reasons she couldn’t quite name, Marguerite felt a strange discomfort settle in her chest.
It had only been two days since they last saw each other, but the way this man treated her had changed so much. She couldn’t make sense of it.
“Marguerite, I honestly never expected that the man you’re marrying would be him!” Luke’s thoughts were equally tangled.
He’d thought that after Marguerite broke up with that other man, maybe he’d have a chance—maybe their relationship could finally move forward.
But he was, once again, a step too late.
“To be honest, I never really thought about it either,” Marguerite said quietly. “Sometimes I ask myself if I’m really ready to just agree to marry someone my parents picked. But this is what my family wants, and I trust my parents—they’d never hurt me. They just want what’s best for me.”
She let out a soft sigh, her gaze growing distant. “I used to believe happiness meant being with someone you loved, but now I think maybe being with someone who’s right for you is enough. Even if you love someone, what’s the point if he doesn’t deserve your love?”
As she spoke, a shadow passed over her face. Unbidden, memories surfaced—she’d given her heart, her everything, believing that sincerity would be returned in kind.
But it hadn’t been.
“Marguerite, you’re being too pessimistic. You’re still so young—you have choices, you still have time. You don’t need to gamble your whole life’s happiness just for your family’s sake!” Luke’s voice was gentle but urgent. “You aren’t even engaged yet. It’s not too late to change your mind. Maybe you were just too hurt, too impulsive, when you agreed to this.”
But things were different now. She’d broken up with that man, but before he could even process it, news of her impending engagement reached him.
Marguerite only shook her head, her voice soft but resolute. “Luke, I know you’re saying this for my sake, but I’ve made my decision. The date is already set. It won’t change.”
“And honestly, I think this is for the best. I’ve let my parents down so many times before. Maybe this is my chance to make it up to them. As long as they’re happy, that’s enough for me.”
She spoke with unwavering determination. From the moment her parents arranged the engagement, she’d never once considered backing out.
“Let’s not talk about these unhappy things anymore,” she said, forcing a small smile. “Let’s focus on something else. I’ll be throwing myself into work these next few weeks, and I hope we can have a great partnership moving forward!”
