Once she finally stepped outside, Marguerite let out a long, relieved sigh. She’d managed to escape at last.
Yet the scene from earlier still played on a loop in her mind, refusing to fade away.
When Marguerite got up that morning, she discovered Wilma had already set out a hot meal for them, waiting patiently for the two to join her.
Catching sight of Marguerite emerging from Leonard’s room, Wilma’s face broke into a gentle, satisfied smile. “Good morning, ma’am. You’re up. Breakfast is ready—please, come eat while it’s hot.”
“Thank you, Wilma,” Marguerite replied warmly. She’d always treated Wilma with kindness and respect.
A few minutes later, Leonard appeared as well, dressed sharply in a black shirt as if he was about to head out for the day.
“Mr. Murphy, your breakfast is waiting,” Wilma said, ushering him to the table.
Marguerite and Leonard sat down together and began to eat.
They were still halfway through the meal when Marguerite’s phone rang.
It was Luke calling.
“Marguerite, I’ve finalized a draft for our partnership proposal. If you have time, could you come by? We can review it together and discuss some details,” Luke said, his voice loud and clear even through the phone.
“Oh, and I have a little surprise waiting for you—a dessert I know you love. You’re in for a treat when you get here!”
Leonard, sitting across from her, immediately stiffened. His expression darkened. Even if there was nothing between the two of them, the idea of Marguerite being with another man—regardless of the context—bothered him more than he cared to admit. He knew they were just colleagues working on a project, but as a man himself, Leonard could sense the way Luke felt about her.
But he couldn’t bring himself to say anything.
