He came here today for one reason only—to stake his claim.
Leonard could sense that Luke had always hovered around Marguerite, and after so many years of friendship, there was no way their relationship was as simple as it seemed.
He couldn’t tell if Marguerite had feelings for Luke, but it was painfully obvious that Luke was in love with her.
“Luke, sorry about today. Let me make it up to you—dinner’s on me next time.”
In the end, Marguerite chose to leave with Leonard.
“Sure. I understand,” Luke replied.
Though disappointment flickered in his eyes, he kept his composure, masking any trace of emotion and forcing a polite smile.
After all, Leonard was her fiancé. It made sense for Marguerite to choose him, even if it stung.
On the drive back, Marguerite sat in the passenger seat. Neither of them seemed to have much to say; after all, they were still practically strangers, their acquaintance too recent for effortless conversation.
Marguerite found herself at a loss for words, unsure what topic could bridge the awkward silence.
Suddenly, her thoughts were interrupted by the shrill ring of Leonard’s phone, slicing through the quiet.
He answered immediately.
“Leo, help me! I fell at home and I can’t get up. Please, I need you…”
A woman’s voice trembled on the other end, delicate and urgent.
“Stay put. I’ll be there right away,” Leonard said, his expression turning cold and sharp.
Marguerite couldn’t help but notice how hard Leonard tried to create opportunities for the two of them, hoping to nurture their relationship.
Yet every time, something always went wrong. The constant interruptions were enough to drive anyone mad.
Meanwhile—
Leonard hurried to a nearby villa. Inside, he found the woman sprawled helplessly on the floor, shards of glass scattered all around her.
“How did this happen? Where’s the housekeeper?” Leonard knelt beside her, immediately scooping her into his arms.
Tears streamed down her face as she clung to him, wounded and vulnerable. “She had an emergency and had to leave. I’m all alone today.”
“Leo, I hate feeling so useless,” she whispered, her voice breaking. “I just wanted to do something for myself—get a glass of water—and look at me. I can’t do anything right.”
