“Leo, does this mean I’ll never be able to take care of myself again? Why… why did it have to end up like this? I really am useless.”
Her sobs grew more desperate, her emotions spiraling out of control. She pounded her fists against her lifeless legs, frustration and grief pouring out with every frantic gesture.
Leonard rushed to her side, gently restraining her hands. “Hey, stop! What are you doing to yourself? I’m already reaching out to the best specialists abroad, Winifred. They’re coming soon to discuss your rehab program, and every single one of them agrees—yes, it’s serious, but you’re young. With patience and hard work, you’ll walk again. I promise.”
“All you need to do now is wait a little, and don’t give up. Please, don’t torture yourself like this, not every day.”
He was visibly anxious as he spoke, guiding her carefully back onto the couch. Seeing that her clothes were soaked with tears, Leonard went to fetch her some dry ones, setting them beside her with care.
“Go ahead and change. I’ll be waiting for you in the dining room. I’m going to make you something to eat.”
Leonard rolled up his sleeves and headed to the kitchen, determined to cook a warm meal for her himself.
“Leo, don’t go. Please, just… stay with me. I don’t want you to leave. I’m not even hungry. I just want you here.”
Her voice was thick with sorrow, tears streaming down her cheeks, her vulnerability laid bare.
“You haven’t eaten anything all day, have you? I’m going to make you something, and you have to eat—even if you don’t feel like it. No matter what, you can’t just stop taking care of yourself!”
“You know your condition better than anyone. If you stick with the therapy, you really do have a chance to stand up again. Trust me—give yourself that chance. And give me that chance too.”
Leonard’s concern was evident in every word, his patience unwavering. All he wanted was to help her heal, to see her whole again.
But she just shook her head, her expression bleak. “No, I don’t want to eat. I couldn’t, even if I tried. I’m nothing but a burden now. Lying here every day, it’s torture for me.”
