Seeing his expression darken, Winifred quickly let go of his arm. “I understand, Leo. Honestly, I don’t want to trouble you either. You have so much work to do, and with your engagement coming up, I’m sure there’s a lot to prepare.”
She paused, her voice trembling with guilt. “But sometimes, I just can’t help myself. My falls have gotten worse lately. I didn’t want anyone to bother you, but today, with everyone else gone…”
She looked utterly apologetic, her tone pitiful.
“If you ever need anything, you can call me anytime,” Leonard said gently. “Even if I can’t come myself, I’ll send someone over. Tomorrow, I’ll take you to the hospital. For now, try to get some rest.”
After reassuring her, Leonard left without looking back.
When he returned home, he noticed Marguerite’s bedroom light was already off. She must have gone to bed—it was late, after all.
“Mr. Murphy, you’re back,” the housekeeper greeted him softly.
“Miss Marguerite waited for you in the living room for quite a while. She only went to her room to rest when you still hadn’t come home.”
It was late—Leonard decided not to disturb her. He went straight to his study.
Once inside, he pulled out two folders and leafed through them, but his mind kept wandering. He couldn’t concentrate.
Winifred’s situation weighed heavily on him.
She seemed to be getting worse, both physically and emotionally. He resolved to take her to see a therapist tomorrow for a consultation.
In his heart, Leonard knew that his upcoming engagement would be a heavy blow for her. She might even try to stir up trouble one last time.
But he couldn’t keep running from these things. Sooner or later, he’d have to face them.
