The housekeeper had taken a day off yesterday, but this morning she arrived before sunrise. Seeing that their employer was still asleep, none of the staff dared to disturb her.
“Mr. Murphy, you’re here,” one of the maids greeted quietly as Leonard stepped inside.
“Ms. Brown isn’t up yet. Would you like to wait here for a while?”
Leonard’s reply was icy. “Wake her up. I’m taking her out today.”
He’d managed to secure an appointment with a renowned psychiatrist who had just returned from abroad—a specialist whose time was in high demand. There was no way he could ask the doctor to wait around indefinitely. Honestly, if it weren’t for Leonard’s connections, the psychiatrist wouldn’t have agreed to this at all.
Moments later, Winifred was ushered out of her room, looking flustered and eager to see Leonard.
“Leo, you’re here so early today! If I’d known you’d be coming, I would’ve woken up sooner. I’m really sorry.” She offered an apologetic smile. “Let me go freshen up a bit. Could you wait for me here?”
Her heart was pounding with excitement for reasons she couldn’t quite explain. Leonard almost never came to her home in the morning—he hardly ever visited unless she called him in tears, begging for help. Otherwise, he always kept his distance.
Today was different. Winifred couldn’t help but imagine that maybe Leonard wanted to take her out to get some fresh air, maybe cheer her up after the rough day she’d had yesterday. The thought filled her with hope.
“No problem,” Leonard replied simply.
