But things were different for Leonard now. There was absolutely no way he’d ever spend time alone with this woman again—not unless someone else was there too.
He was about to get engaged. He owed it to his fiancée to be responsible.
He’d wrestled with this before, questioning whether he should stay with Winifred. But in the end, he realized lying to himself would only make things worse. His heart already belonged to Marguerite.
If he stayed with Winifred out of guilt, neither of them would ever be happy. It wouldn’t be fair to himself, and it certainly wouldn’t be fair to her.
“I’m busy with work and don’t have the time,” Leonard said, his voice distant, almost cold. “I’ll ask someone else to take you out for some fresh air.”
But Winifred wouldn’t have it. She shook her head firmly, her face twisting into a pout, managing to look both wounded and petulant. “Leo, I just want to go out with you. I have no interest in being with anyone else.”
“I know you work hard,” she went on, her voice trembling with a hint of desperation, “and sometimes I feel bad for bothering you. But I really want to spend some time with you. Just give me a little—just a little time. Even if you just have dinner with me, that’s enough. I’ve never asked you for much.”
Leonard had never truly thought of leaving her, but his sense of responsibility was the only thing keeping him here now.
“Winifred, getting out more would be good for you,” he said gently but firmly. “But you know how busy I am. I just don’t have the time. I’ll have someone come by to take you out, and I promise you’ll enjoy yourself.”
He was willing to do everything he could to make things easier for her—but he drew the line at crossing boundaries he knew he shouldn’t.
