“All right, just follow my lead.”
The two of them talked the entire drive, right up until they reached Winifred’s house.
“I’ve still got work waiting for me at the office, so I won’t come in. You go get some rest.”
With that, Leonard turned to leave.
“Leo, it’s already lunchtime. Why don’t you stay and eat with me? No matter how busy you are, you still have to eat, right?”
She tried to coax him, her voice softening. “And besides, I don’t have much of an appetite without you here. When you’re around, I can manage a few more bites. Please? Just stay and keep me company, won’t you?”
“I really can’t today,” Leonard replied, his tone gentle but firm. “There’s still a mountain of work I need to handle at the office.”
In the end, he didn’t stay. Without hesitation, he turned and walked away.
Winifred’s face was clouded with dissatisfaction, but she didn’t dare say much or make a scene. She was afraid of pushing him too far, worried he might start avoiding her completely if she went too far.
Once he left, Leonard drove straight back to the office—there was always more work waiting for him. Still, he knew Winifred was a problem he couldn’t just ignore.
Marguerite, as another woman, could easily sense Laura’s budding interest. But Laura was self-aware; she knew their worlds were miles apart, and while she’d sometimes ask a question or steal a glance, she never let her imagination run too far.
She didn’t expect anything to happen with Luke, nor did she dare dream of a future together.
Marguerite grinned. “Laura, you haven’t fallen for him at first sight, have you? He really is a good guy—and very approachable, too. If you’re interested, I could introduce you properly.”
“We already know each other, at least a little,” Laura said, cheeks tinged pink. “And he’s told you I do good work? That’s flattering—but please, Ms. Taylor, let’s not get carried away. I’m just a junior assistant, and he’s from a whole different world. There’s no way someone like me could ever be with someone like him.”
