He didn’t see any need for Winifred to be present at this sort of family gathering. If she came along, it would only lead to unnecessary complications, so he decided that he and Marguerite would just go together.
Besides, once Marguerite became his fiancée, it wouldn’t be appropriate to bring anyone else to family occasions like this. He knew he’d have to put a stop to situations like this in the future.
Winifred’s disappointment was written all over her face. She was clearly upset, and when she glanced at Marguerite, her eyes were full of hostility. In her mind, Marguerite was the enemy—the sole reason Leo no longer belonged to her and couldn’t be taken back.
She’d felt Leo’s attitude toward her shift ever since this woman appeared. Everything had changed since Marguerite arrived.
“All right, Leo,” Winifred said, forcing a bright smile. “Please make sure to give this gift to your grandmother for me. I’m sure she’ll love it. It’s been ages since I last visited her, but I’ll go see her as soon as I can.”
“Your grandmother has always been so kind to me. I’ll never forget that, truly, it’s just that…” Winifred trailed off, leaving her words unfinished. But her meaning was clear enough—she didn’t need to spell it out; both Leo and Marguerite could read between the lines.
Leonard just gave a noncommittal hum in response.
Marguerite let out a long breath, her face pale. Winifred’s sudden appearance had left her deeply unsettled. She wondered if she was meddling in things that weren’t her concern. Why did any of this matter to her? But honestly, anyone else in her position would probably feel the same way—after all, it was only human nature.
It was clear that Winifred would have lingered if Leonard hadn’t spoken up. She seemed determined to stay until she got what she wanted. But with his words, she had no choice but to leave—though her frustration was obvious.
“Leo, I’ll be going then. Don’t forget what you promised me!” she called over her shoulder.
Promised her? Marguerite let out a cold, bitter laugh. Just how many secrets did those two share? What else was going on that she didn’t know about?
