Goodbye My Arrogant Ex (Marguerite and Leonard) novel Chapter 141

Mrs. Murphy glanced around the table, realizing they’d been talking for quite some time. It was about time everyone had something to eat, and, frankly, she didn’t want to dwell any longer on such a painful subject in front of the old lady.

Leonard nodded in agreement, and the group settled in together for a proper meal.

Truth be told, the events of the day had deeply affected the matriarch. It was, after all, her birthday—a day that should have been filled with nothing but joy—and instead, it had been overshadowed by so much turmoil.

After dinner, once they’d finished keeping her company, Leonard and Marguerite prepared to leave the old family house.

Marguerite hadn’t been home to see her parents in ages, and the thought of visiting them tugged at her heart.

“I think Gran’s feeling a bit down,” she said quietly to Leonard. “Why don’t you stay here and keep her company tonight? I can go home to see my parents on my own—it’s really no trouble.”

Marguerite’s concern was clear. After the argument earlier, she didn’t feel right about leaving her grandmother alone in such a big, quiet house. Visits from the younger generation were rare enough, and though her grandmother had grown used to solitude over the years, Marguerite knew deep down she still longed for family around her.

“Marguerite, just hearing you say that makes me happy,” her grandmother replied, her eyes softening. “You’ve always been such a thoughtful girl. But don’t worry about me—I don’t want to get in the way of you two spending time together. Wherever life takes you, just promise me you’ll look out for each other.”

“As long as I see you both happy,” she added with a gentle smile, “my spirits will lift, I promise you that.”

There was a warmth in her voice, a reassurance that she’d never doubted her granddaughter.

Seeing the resolve in their eyes, the old woman finally relented and said nothing more.

“I’ll be staying tonight, too,” Mrs. Murphy chimed in. “It’s been ages since we all played cards together. Why don’t we do that after dinner and lift everyone’s spirits?”

She was always attentive, keenly aware of her son’s intentions and hoping to help the old lady recover from the day’s emotional upheaval.

“Alright then, let’s do that,” the old lady agreed, a hint of a smile returning to her face. “But before we start, Leonard, make sure you drive Maggie home yourself and take some gifts for her parents. That’s only proper.”
