Goodbye My Arrogant Ex (Marguerite and Leonard) novel Chapter 142

The old lady was always remarkably thorough, thinking through every detail and considering every angle. She worried Leonard might accidentally neglect their guest, so she gave him a few gentle reminders before he left.

“Don’t worry, Grandma,” Leonard replied, shaking his head with a helpless smile. “I’ve already made all the arrangements. I’ll make sure she gets home safely, and then I’ll bring her back here afterward.”

Their two houses were barely a fifteen-minute drive apart, so the round trip would take no more than half an hour.

“Good,” his grandmother said, visibly relieved. Lately, nothing made her happier than seeing her grandson with a suitable partner—especially someone she genuinely liked herself.

After leaving the house, Leonard accompanied Marguerite back to her place. On the way, she couldn’t help but ask, “Why didn’t you give your grandmother the gift Winifred brought? Aren’t you worried that she’ll show up later and ask about it?”

Marguerite couldn’t quite put her finger on it, but something about seeing Leonard and Winifred together made her uneasy. She found herself dwelling on it, and she’d half-expected to see his grandmother’s reaction when she received the gift. But Leonard had just kept it to himself.

“Why should I give it to her?” Leonard replied evenly, eyes fixed on the road ahead.

Marguerite spoke slowly, understanding her fiancé in a way few people ever had. Every time she visited his family’s home, she couldn’t help but wonder why things had turned out as they did—had he ever really been happy growing up?

“Thank you, Marguerite,” Leonard said quietly. For the first time, someone was willing to share his pain, to stand by him instead of leaving him to bear it alone. Her words warmed him to his core. After all these years, he realized he hadn’t waited in vain.

She nudged him with a smile. “You don’t have to be so formal with me. You’ve been the one taking care of me all this time. I might not be able to help much with your family, but I’ll always be on your side, no matter what. You’ve done nothing wrong, Leonard. Don’t ever let them force you to compromise.”
