“Leonard, I know you and Marguerite have both been working so hard lately, but don’t forget about the engagement. The date still isn’t set, you know, and honestly, I’m getting anxious for the two of you.”
“I understand you’re both swamped at work, but there’s no need for you to handle everything yourselves. I’ll take care of the arrangements for you. I don’t have much on my plate these days anyway. Plus, your mother and I chat all the time when we play cards—we can plan things together then!”
She and Mrs. Taylor had always been close, more like lifelong friends than mere acquaintances. Whether it was shopping or their weekly card games, they were often seen together, always looking out for each other.
Now that their children were about to be engaged, their friendship felt even more like family.
“No problem here. Whatever Marguerite wants works for me.”
“I’m not sure what’s on her mind lately, but as long as she’s happy, I’m happy to go along with whatever she decides!”
Leonard always handled things so well, but for this, he genuinely wanted to follow Marguerite’s lead. She was the bride, after all, and he knew she might have her own vision for the engagement. He intended to respect that completely.
“Mom, if you and Mrs. Taylor aren’t too busy, we’d actually love for you to take charge of the engagement party. I’m sure you two would handle everything with so much more care than we ever could!”
“I just hope it won’t be too much trouble for you both.”
“Leonard, I know things have been a bit tense in your family lately, but don’t worry. We’re all behind you. I know you didn’t take over your grandmother’s company for fame or money. We’ve all seen how hard you’ve worked over the years—it’s always been for her.”
“As for what the others say, let them talk. If anyone tries to stir up trouble, they’ll have us to answer to. We won’t just stand by and watch.”
Mrs. Taylor meant every word, completely unafraid to stand up for him—even against his own family.
Aside from his mother, she was the first person to offer him such unreserved support, and Leonard was deeply moved.
