Goodbye My Arrogant Ex (Marguerite and Leonard) novel Chapter 149

Leonard stepped forward and pressed his hand to her forehead—she was burning up.

He felt a wave of frustration. She was clearly in bad shape, so why on earth was she still trying to tough it out at home instead of getting proper treatment?

He really didn’t know what to do with this woman.

Standing up abruptly, Leonard’s voice was cold and sharp. “Winifred, are you trying to kill yourself? It’s late, the family doctor’s long gone for the night, and there’s no way I can get him here now. You’re coming with me to the hospital. Right now.”

Lately, he found her harder and harder to understand. Why keep pretending everything was fine when she could barely sit up? What was she trying to prove?

“Leo, I’ve already had some hot tea and if I just sleep, I’ll probably be fine. Can you please stay with me? I really don’t want to go to the hospital. I hate hospitals…I can’t stand them anymore.”

She looked utterly forlorn, pleading with him, desperation shining in her eyes. No matter what he said, she refused to budge.

Still, Winifred was deeply moved that Leonard had come to see her tonight. She couldn’t help feeling a flicker of hope—clearly, she still mattered to him. Otherwise, why would he have rushed over the moment he heard she had a fever? He must still care.

That woman he was engaged to couldn’t truly mean anything to him—he’d probably only agreed to that engagement to appease his family!

Winifred tried to calm herself, repeating this silently in her mind. After all, it was she who’d asked the housekeeper to call him, just to see if he’d actually leave his fiancée behind and come to her in the middle of the night.

And he had come. She hadn’t misjudged him.

“Enough!” Leonard cut her off, his patience finally wearing thin. “You’re seriously ill, Winifred. If you don’t get to a hospital, you could end up with complications. Pack a bag and come with me—or I’ll carry you out myself.”

Dawn broke.

He’d spent the entire night at her side, which was far more exhausting than any late night at the office.

But he couldn’t just leave her—he owed her that much.

Leonard decided to call one of the house staff to come and stay with Winifred while he went to the office to catch up on work. He gathered his things, ready to leave.

But just as he stood up, he heard her voice, soft and frail behind him. “Leo, please don’t go. I need you.”

“Leo, I really can’t stand being here alone. I hate hospitals—I just can’t do this by myself. Please, stay with me a little longer?”
