Goodbye My Arrogant Ex (Marguerite and Leonard) novel Chapter 160

Leonard let out a deep sigh. “Winifred, you know how busy I am with work. If I had more time to visit, I would be there with you, but right now just isn’t possible.”

“I’ve already explained everything to you. I really hope you can find something to do each day—something you enjoy. If there’s anything you want or need, just tell me and I’ll do my best to make it happen.”

He could give her anything—except his constant presence. After all, they were just friends; spending too much time together would only complicate things.

“It’s late, Winifred. Try to get some rest, alright? If there’s anything you want to talk about, let’s do it tomorrow. I’ve arranged for a specialist to see you, and I’ll come by in the morning to take you there myself.”

Though Leonard had been swamped with work lately, the specialist he’d contacted was finally available this week. He knew it was time to prioritize Winifred’s treatment.

Maybe starting rehabilitation would give her something to focus on, something to help keep her from sinking into endless worry and regret.

“Leo, you really mean it? You’ll actually come with me?” Her voice trembled. “If you’re there, I’ll go.”

But deep down, Winifred had no intention of going through with the rehab. She wanted to stay in her wheelchair for the rest of her life. Only then would Leonard always feel guilty—only then would he never be able to just walk away from her.

“Of course,” he replied.

Leonard was nothing if not responsible. This was Winifred’s first meeting with the doctor, and he knew he had to be there to make sure everything was taken care of before he could relax.

“All right, I’ll see you tomorrow then.”

“Leo, I’ve been through so many tests over the years. I can’t take it anymore. Please, can’t we just stop?”

She shrank back, her voice shaking. “Just seeing all that cold, sterile equipment makes me panic. Can’t we use the old scans you have? Please?”

Leonard’s heart clenched. He knew how much pain and despair she’d endured—there was no way to avoid it, and it was the reason guilt gnawed at him day after day.

“The old scans aren’t helpful anymore. Your condition has changed, and the doctors need to see where things stand now. It’ll just be a quick exam, I promise—it won’t hurt. I’ll stay with you the whole time.”

Since they were at a private clinic, the staff was warm and considerate, doing all they could to put her at ease.
