Don’t be fooled by Mrs. Murphy’s usual warmth and humility—she’s sharp as a tack, and nothing escapes her notice.
She instantly saw through the situation and pinpointed the real problem: it was that woman again. Clearly, Winifred was finding every excuse to keep Leonard around; otherwise, he wouldn’t have stayed to look after her for so long.
“I knew it had to be that woman,” Mrs. Murphy said, her tone edged with frustration. “Yes, she once saved my son’s life, and Leonard has done more than enough to repay her over the years. So why does she keep clinging to him? Doesn’t she have any sense of boundaries? He’s about to get engaged, for heaven’s sake!”
“I can tell exactly what’s on her mind. She’s infatuated with my son and wants to keep him tethered to her side. But Leonard doesn’t feel a thing for her. If he ever had, they’d have been together long ago. And honestly, if she hadn’t chased after him so relentlessly back then, that car accident never would have happened.”
Just hearing Winifred’s name was enough to set Mrs. Murphy on edge. It was like a nerve had been struck—her entire demeanor grew agitated.
“That’s enough,” Mrs. Taylor interjected gently. “What’s done is done. The only reason Leonard is taking care of her now is because he’s responsible to a fault. That’s one of his best qualities.”
“If he didn’t help her, he’d carry that guilt for the rest of his life. The weight of it would never lift, and in a way, this is good for him. Still, I’ll admit it’s a bit unfair to Marguerite.”
Mrs. Taylor was always fair-minded. She could see things from a broader perspective and tried to consider everyone’s feelings.
Leonard took after her in that way—always feeling responsible, always carrying a hint of guilt, and never shirking his duties.
“Alright, let’s let them know we’re here,” the older woman said decisively. “Tell them both to come home. Whatever needs to be discussed, we’ll do it together as a family.” Truthfully, she just missed them and wanted to see them as soon as possible.
When Marguerite got the call from home, she was stunned. She hadn’t expected the families to show up in person, but she immediately put her work aside and hurried home.
Meanwhile, Leonard was still at the rehabilitation center, helping Winifred with her physical therapy. As soon as he got the call, he frowned, his brow creasing with worry.
He didn’t need to guess who had come up with this idea—it had to be his mother. And he was certain she was here to give him a piece of her mind.
