There were times, no matter how capable she was, she simply couldn’t control other people.
For now, though, everything that had happened today was finally behind them. Everyone had gone back to their own rooms to rest, leaving just the two of them alone.
Once they were back in their room, Leonard wrapped Marguerite in his arms without a word.
“I know you were put through a lot today,” he said quietly. “Everyone keeps telling you to be understanding with me, but honestly, you shouldn't have to. I’ve been dealing with a lot too.”
“I promise I’ll resolve this as soon as possible. And I swear, after this, you won’t have to see that woman again. I won’t let her interfere with our lives anymore.”
Leonard was wracked with guilt. Ever since they’d gotten engaged, their lives had revolved around this mess—endless discussions, no clear end in sight.
Before, that woman would only reach out to him occasionally. But ever since he started his physical therapy, they saw each other every day, and she’d call constantly, always needing something.
He hated burdening Marguerite with all this, but he also didn’t want to sneak around behind her back. They were about to start a life together—secrets would only erode the trust they needed.
“Leonard, I know you’re caught in a tough spot,” Marguerite replied gently. “Don’t worry about me. I trust you. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t be here with you.”
“I know there’s nothing going on between you and her. You don’t have to report to me every day. I’m here to help however I can. Honestly, your mother’s just trying to make me feel secure, to show me everyone’s on my side.”
Marguerite smiled. “I’d love that. I really believe things will get better. And I know she’ll walk again someday.”
Sometimes, Marguerite thought Winifred was being foolish. She had every chance to get back on her feet—why not at least try?
Regaining her mobility would be a blessing, a chance at a whole new life. With so much help around her, all Winifred had to do was stick with the rehab. It might be tough at first, but if she persevered, she could win this fight.
But Marguerite could tell that Winifred seemed ready to give up, resisting every step of her treatment.
Still, as an outsider, it wasn’t her place to say anything. All she could do was watch the situation unfold, hoping for the best.
