The doctor’s sharp eyes flicked between Fiona and Benjamin, a tangle of emotions playing across his face—curiosity, concern, and just a hint of gossip.
But in the end, he simply pressed his lips together, said nothing, and strode away at an unhurried pace.
Fiona’s face was as white as a sheet. She trembled slightly as she looked at Benjamin, a flash of disappointment crossing her eyes before she could hide it. Her voice was choked with tears.
“Ben, thank God you’re okay. Maggie really went too far this time. What if something had actually happened to you? I don’t know what I would’ve done.”
Benjamin gave her shoulder a gentle pat, forcing himself to sound calm. “Come on, the doctor said I’m fine. It’s late. Let’s just go home, alright?”
Truthfully, all he wanted was to get back and see if Marguerite had returned. Regret gnawed at him—he needed to explain everything to her, to make things right.
He realized that his attitude tonight had been awful. He shouldn’t have let things get so tense with Marguerite because of Fiona; he shouldn’t have made her feel so hurt.
The ride back was silent. Benjamin stared out the windshield, brow furrowed, eyes hollow and distant.
Fiona noticed immediately that something was off. She bit her lip, then apologized, her voice small and hesitant. “Ben, you’re thinking about Maggie, aren’t you? I promise, I’ll apologize to her as soon as we get home. This is all my fault—I was being selfish.”
Benjamin snapped back to the present, turning to look at her, worry etched deeply in his expression. “This isn’t your fault. But listen, just stay in for a while, okay? If anyone from the Howell family comes looking for you, it’s safer you’re not out and about. Promise me.”
