Goodbye My Arrogant Ex (Marguerite and Leonard) novel Chapter 201

At that moment, Leonard was deep in conversation with several business associates. Out of respect for the Murphy family, everyone had made a point of attending the engagement party.

But as soon as Leonard caught sight of Marguerite, he politely excused himself and made his way straight to her side.

Marguerite was just about to say something to him when a familiar figure appeared at her elbow—Winifred Brown.

She hadn’t expected Winifred to show up. For a second, Marguerite was caught off guard. Why was Winifred here? Hadn’t Leonard made things clear to her before the engagement?

The truth was, Leonard had already spoken to Winifred. He’d told her it would be best if she didn’t come to the party—especially after everything that had happened. Her presence would only stir up gossip, and it wouldn’t do her reputation any favors.

Yet, here Winifred was, undeterred and impossible to predict, arriving in a wheelchair. She’d lost her usual poise, looking disheveled, almost as if she wanted to appear pitiful on purpose.

“Leo, Marguerite, congratulations on your engagement,” Winifred said warmly, her smile radiant. “I know today is such a special day for you both. I just finished a round of physical therapy and I’m not feeling my best, but I really wanted to be here to wish you well in person. This day means so much for you—I wanted to show my support.”

Her words were gracious, full of warmth and enthusiasm.

“Winifred, I told you before,” Leonard replied, his tone weary, “this isn’t the right occasion for you to be here…”

As they walked away, Marguerite let out a resigned sigh, glancing at the guests gathering around them. “If I’d known it would be like this, I never would’ve agreed to the engagement party. It doesn’t feel meaningful to us—it’s just brought more drama.”

“Marguerite, I should’ve handled this better. I’m sorry you have to go through all this because of me. Ever since we got together, it seems like I’ve only made things harder for you,” Leonard said, his voice heavy with regret.

“It’s all right,” Marguerite replied softly. “Some things are just out of our control. We can’t change what people do or say. As long as we trust each other, that’s all that matters. Nothing and no one can come between us.”

“As for Winifred, let her do what she wants. We’ve explained things to her, but it’s clear she won’t listen. Maybe it’s best just to let her be.”
