“Alright, let’s take Mom home first. There’s no point in staying here now, not after everything that’s happened.”
Aaron was the picture of composure, even in the chaos. So many eyes were on them; they couldn’t just stand here and be the subject of everyone’s gossip and pity. Besides, he was a Murphy now.
Leonard’s mother looked utterly overwhelmed. She never could have imagined that this man would ruin her son’s engagement party in front of everyone.
Benjamin had been forcibly escorted out. He didn’t try to resist, but the damage was done—irreversible and humiliating.
What now...
“Today’s engagement party is over. Thank you all for coming and supporting us. I’m sorry you had to witness this. We’ll handle things as quickly as possible.”
Leonard’s face was grim as he picked up the microphone. After a few clipped words to the guests, he ushered his family out, not sparing a backward glance.
People lingered, whispering amongst themselves, but with the party officially over, there was little reason to stay. One by one, they trickled out.
“Grandma, are you alright?” Marguerite hovered anxiously by Mrs. Murphy, worried by how pale and shaken she looked.
“Marguerite, spare me your fake concern. If it weren’t for you, none of this would’ve happened. You’re already engaged—why can’t you let go of your ex? Look at the mess you’ve made for our family!” Edith blocked Marguerite’s way, her voice sharp with accusation.
“Enough, Edith. That’s enough out of you,” someone snapped.
“Grandma, let me take you to the hospital.” Leonard’s insistence was gentle but firm. He could tell she was struggling to hold herself together, and her health couldn’t be ignored any longer.
They made their way to the hospital quickly, with Marguerite by Grandma’s side the entire time.
“Leonard, all of this is my fault,” Marguerite said quietly once they were alone. “I had no idea he would show up, let alone cause a scene. I wasn’t prepared at all. Whatever the consequences, I’ll face them with you.”
There wasn’t much she could do—she wasn’t even familiar with how things ran at the company.
“I know none of this is your fault. I’ll find a way to fix things. Please, don’t let this weigh on you,” Leonard replied, his trust in her absolute. There wasn’t the slightest hint of blame in his voice.
