No matter what problems arose, the two of them could face them together. As long as they trusted each other, that was enough.
They finally reached the hospital. Leonard’s grandmother was rushed straight into the emergency room for treatment.
Her heart had never been strong, and the shock had been too much—her frail body simply couldn’t bear it.
Marguerite was left waiting outside, anxiety gnawing at her. A heavy guilt pressed down on her chest; if it hadn’t been for her, maybe none of this would have happened to Grandma.
But it was too late for regret—the damage had already been done.
Leonard’s mother paced nearby, her nerves fraying with every passing minute.
“I warned you, didn’t I?” she snapped, her frustration bubbling over. “I told you not to go marrying just anyone off the street—something like this was bound to happen and bring trouble to our family. But no, you wouldn’t listen. Well, now you see I was right, don’t you?”
Edith watched the group, barely concealing her satisfaction at their distress, though her words were laced with feigned concern.
“Oh, please. Who are you calling ‘just anyone’? If anyone’s careless, it’s you!”
“This was an accident—no one wanted this to happen. If you’re actually worried about Mother, then stay. But if you’re just here to make a scene, you can leave right now. I don’t have the patience to argue, not today.”
Mrs. Murphy was already on edge. Hearing Edith stir up trouble only made her angrier.
Both his mother and Edith fell silent, realizing that even they had to show some restraint here. Whatever disputes needed settling could wait until they were back home.
The next stretch was a long, uneasy wait. Marguerite sat in tense silence, her nerves raw. She didn’t care what others thought of her, nor did she pay much attention to the gossip—she only needed to know in her heart that she had done nothing wrong.
What worried her most was Grandma’s health. The old woman had never been strong, and ever since Marguerite joined the Murphy family, it seemed Grandma was always shouldering new worries because of her. This latest episode had landed her in a hospital bed, and the guilt was suffocating.
If anything happened to Grandma, Marguerite knew she’d never forgive herself.
At last, the doors to the emergency room swung open and the doctor stepped out.
