"Doctor, how is Mrs. Murphy doing now? She got quite a shock earlier, so we brought her straight to the hospital. Has she recovered at all?"
The doctor gave a measured nod. "Her heart isn’t in the best condition, and she can’t handle too much stress. Thankfully, you brought her in quickly this time. She’s stable now and out of immediate danger. We’ll move her to a patient room soon, but she’ll need to stay here for observation for about a week. If nothing else comes up, she can go home after that."
He glanced between the worried faces around him. "But as her family, you need to be extra careful from now on. Don’t let her get upset like this again. Another shock could cause her heart to fail, and it could be life-threatening."
After giving his instructions and explaining the situation, the doctor left them in the hallway. The truth was, everyone knew Mrs. Murphy’s health had been fragile for a while. None of them wanted her to bear so much stress, but what was done was done.
"We understand," one of them replied quietly.
"Thank you, Doctor. We’ll be careful, and we won’t let Mrs. Murphy be put at risk again."
"Let’s get her settled in her room so she can rest," the doctor suggested before walking away.
Leonard checked the time; it was already getting late. He looked at the others and spoke up, "I’ll stay with Grandma tonight. You should all head home—it’s been a long day."
He didn’t want to listen to any more arguing, especially with Mrs. Murphy just barely out of danger. If she woke up and saw them bickering, it would only upset her more.
He had never blamed her for any of this. If anything, the rushed engagement had caught both of them off guard, and they’d been so wrapped up in their own work that they hadn’t anticipated things going wrong.
"It’s alright," Marguerite insisted softly. "I’ll stay with you and wait till Grandma wakes up. I wouldn’t feel right leaving her tonight anyway."
Mrs. Murphy’s daughter-in-law saw the two of them by the bedside and shook her head gently. "There’s no need for all of us to crowd the room. You two can handle things here. I’ll go home and get some rest."
With that, the family quietly went their separate ways, leaving Leonard and Marguerite to keep watch over Mrs. Murphy through the night.
