Goodbye My Arrogant Ex (Marguerite and Leonard) novel Chapter 22

For reasons she couldn’t quite explain, a vague sense of disquiet swept over Marguerite.

She and Benjamin had spent seven years together, more than two thousand days and nights side by side. She’d always assumed their relationship was rock-solid, that their connection was effortless and unspoken. Yet, when she thought about it now, it struck her: these few short days with Leonard had somehow felt more comfortable, more natural than all those years with Benjamin. Leonard seemed to read her mind before she even spoke; a single glance, a simple word from him, and she felt her guard slipping away.

A sharp knock at the door jolted Marguerite back to the present.

She looked up instinctively, her gaze shifting toward the entrance. A fleeting look of apology crossed her face as she spoke softly, “Someone’s here. Let’s talk later.”

With that, she gently pressed the button to end her call with Leonard.

Gathering herself, she stood and walked gracefully toward the door.

Outside, Laura waited, balancing a takeout bag in her hands, concern written all over her face.

Marguerite opened the door, surprised for a moment before her brow furrowed in gentle reproach tinged with affection. “Didn’t I tell you to go home and get some rest? Why are you back here again?”

Laura’s lips curved into a warm, sincere smile. “Ms. Taylor, I figured you’d be run off your feet at the gala tonight and probably hadn’t eaten a thing.”

“I was worried your stomach might give you trouble later, so I brought you something to eat.” She held out the takeout box with both hands, careful not to spill anything.

She set the takeout on the side table, then led Laura to the couch, her gaze intent and ready to dive into the details, determined to chart the best course for the company’s future.

Marguerite cradled an elegant porcelain bowl, sipping warm, nourishing soup in small, careful spoonfuls. The heat eased her weariness as she listened to Laura’s clear, concise report.

“Ms. Taylor, since you’ve been away from the office, Mr. Foster has been completely preoccupied with Ms. Jenkins. He’s already declined several major projects. The senior board members have noticed, and there’s been a lot of grumbling and whispered complaints.”

Laura frowned slightly, a hint of worry coloring her tone.
