Goodbye My Arrogant Ex (Marguerite and Leonard) novel Chapter 23

Marguerite set down her porcelain bowl with a quiet clink, her eyes clouded with a tangle of emotions as she nodded thoughtfully.

She’d only come home for a brief visit, hoping to sort out the engagement arrangements and return promptly. She hadn’t expected Benjamin to act so recklessly, as if he couldn’t wait to throw the company into chaos. His impatience bordered on self-destruction, as though he was eager to hand over the company to anyone who would take it.

“How’s the progress on the assets I asked you to liquidate?” Marguerite’s gaze settled on Laura, her tone calm but leaving no room for argument.

Laura let out a soft sigh. “I’ve reached out to the other board members’ assistants, just as you asked.”

“They all pretty much said the same thing—they’re worried that if you sell off your shares, the company will go downhill fast. Operations could spiral out of control, and if we end up bankrupt, those shares would become worthless. No one wants to be left holding the bag.”

Marguerite tapped her pen against the desk, her eyes narrowing ever so slightly with quiet confidence. “It’s fine. Even if we can’t find a buyer, we’re not going to take a loss.”

The two women were deep in discussion, mapping out their next steps, when Laura’s phone began to buzz insistently on the table.

Marguerite’s eyes flicked toward the phone, and her brows knit together, her expression growing tense.

Laura glanced at Marguerite, silently asking for direction. “Should I answer?”

Lounging back against the sofa, Marguerite gave a sly, almost amused smile. “Go ahead—but don’t mention me.”

Laura nodded, pressed the answer button, and switched to speakerphone. “Mr. Foster.”

“Where’s Marguerite?” Benjamin’s voice crackled through, rough with impatience.

That night, both women slept soundly, undisturbed by dreams or worries.

But elsewhere, in the sprawling suburban house, Fiona and Benjamin tossed and turned, sleepless and anxious, as if sitting on a bed of nails.

Morning in the villa.

Fiona rubbed the sleep from her eyes and shuffled lazily down the stairs. The moment she entered the living room, she spotted Benjamin slumped on the couch, his head bowed, every ounce of energy drained from his body.

Her heart skipped a beat. She hurried over, perching beside him, her voice trembling with worry and tenderness. “Ben, don’t tell me you stayed up all night?”
