Leonard had just spent the entire day chairing a meeting with his team. Throughout the discussion, he uncovered a host of problems that couldn’t be ignored. He didn’t bother to sugarcoat his words or show any leniency just because his position had changed. There was no hint of restraint in his tone—he was as direct and uncompromising as ever.
If anything, his lack of authority only made the team more brazen in their pushback. They resented his criticism, though they barely dared show it. After all, it was their own mistakes he’d seized upon.
“All right, that’s it for today,” Leonard said coldly as the meeting wrapped up. “If these issues aren’t fixed by next time, the consequences will be doubled—and I’ll hold individuals personally responsible. I expect each of you to do your job properly from now on.” With that, he stood up and strode out of the conference room without another word.
By the time Leonard finished at the office and made it home, it was already well past midnight. He could imagine how disgruntled and exhausted everyone had been after that meeting, but none of them would dare complain out loud.
He found Marguerite still working in the study. Quietly, he poured her a cup of hot water and set it on her desk. “It’s really late,” he said gently. “You should get some rest.”
Marguerite glanced at the clock, surprised to see how late it had gotten. She’d stayed up waiting for Leonard, hoping to ask him about what was happening at the company and whether things had been resolved.
“There’s a patent we need to update, so I’ve been sorting through the data,” she explained. “I didn’t realize how late it was until now. Time just slipped away once I got started.”
She looked at him, concern softening her features. “And you? Did you get everything sorted out at work?”
“It’s late,” Leonard said quietly. “Let’s get some rest.”
Now that he was home, Marguerite finally felt at ease. She could sleep soundly at last.
The next morning, Marguerite arrived at the office as usual. As she approached the studio entrance, she spotted Laura already waiting there.
“Laura? I thought I told you things were quiet this week and you could come in later. How come you’re here so early?” Marguerite asked, her tone warm with concern.
