Judging from Leonard’s reaction, the doctor could already sense what he was thinking. Leonard still wanted to go through with surgery for his grandmother, but as a physician, it was the doctor’s duty to put a stop to it.
When they left the doctor’s office, a heavy silence hung between them. Neither of them managed even a hint of a smile.
They stood quietly outside Mrs. Murphy’s hospital room, looking in through the glass at the frail figure on the bed. The sight weighed heavily on both of their hearts.
Leonard broke the silence first. “Honestly, Grandma’s health getting to this point is partly my fault. If I’d given up on the company sooner, maybe none of this would’ve happened.”
He’d been thinking about stepping away from the family business for a long time. If he had, maybe all the family drama would’ve ended, and his grandmother could have enjoyed some peace.
But Mrs. Murphy had never been willing to hand over the company to anyone else. She trusted Leonard, wanted him to run things. That knowledge left him deeply conflicted.
Marguerite turned to him, incredulous. “Are you really planning to give up the company? I know you’re only thinking about what’s best for your grandmother, but have you considered why she trusts you? If you hand it over to them, they’re just going to drain it dry one day.”
“All of her life’s work—gone, just like that. Do you really want to put her through that kind of heartbreak?”
Even though Mrs. Murphy was getting on in years, they both knew she still cared deeply about the company. She kept up with everything—every detail—despite her age.
“But if I stay,” Leonard replied, his voice tight with frustration, “they’ll just keep causing trouble. They want to wear her down until she gives in. I’m running out of options here.”
“I’ve arranged for the best cardiologists, both here and abroad, to come in for a consultation tomorrow.”
He hadn’t given up on finding a solution. For days now, he’d been reaching out to renowned specialists, determined to do whatever it took to help his grandmother.
He’d read everything he could about her condition, trying to understand the risks and the options.
Marguerite knew exactly why he was doing all this. As far as she was concerned, if there was even the slightest chance of Mrs. Murphy recovering, nothing else mattered.
