“I know you did all this for my own good. I realize you’ve been hurt in the past, and that’s why you looked into him ahead of time—to protect me. And honestly, nothing you found out was wrong.”
“It’s better I know now, rather than discovering the truth after we get married someday. That would be even worse—I'd be completely blindsided. Right now, I’m just torn about whether I should talk to him about it directly.”
“I’ve thought a lot about this these past few days. I can’t really blame him. He’s so young—what could he have done differently? But the past is what it is, and none of us can change it. That’s why I feel completely lost about what to do.”
Hogan sounded utterly defeated, his voice barely above a whisper. He had no idea how to handle what came next.
“Don’t be so hard on yourself,” Marguerite said gently. “And don’t let this weigh you down so much. If there’s a problem, face it head-on. Talk to him. Be honest. If you can accept his past and he’s willing to be open with you, to have no secrets between you, then I don’t see why you two can’t be together. And I’ll support you both, no matter what.”
“But I hate seeing you this upset all the time.”
Marguerite’s heart ached for Hogan. She truly didn’t know what else to say—this was something only the two of them could face together. No one else could fix it for them.
Marguerite’s words were tinged with helplessness. Seeing her brother in such pain hurt her deeply, but she knew she couldn’t push him—this was his decision to make. The more she said, the more pressure she’d put on him.
After a few more quiet words, they ended the call. It was clear that Hogan wasn’t ready to make a decision yet. He loved too deeply, and he genuinely wanted what was best for this woman. That’s why he couldn’t just make a snap judgment.
“Leonard, you heard how he sounded just now. I really don’t know what to do next, or how to help her,” Marguerite admitted, her voice heavy with worry.
