“Do you honestly believe that Grandma Murphy entrusted the company to you because she trusts you and thinks you’re so capable?”
Baron’s voice dripped with sarcasm. “You’re far too naïve, Leonard. Grandma just sees you as a moneymaking tool. When the time comes, the company will stay in our family—between my brother and me. You’re just an outsider, so let me give you some advice: leave on your own before you end up utterly humiliated. Spare yourself the embarrassment.”
Baron’s words were laced with open contempt, making it clear he didn’t see Leonard as a threat—or even an equal.
Leonard met his gaze calmly. “I promised Grandma I’d take care of the company. If she ever asks me to step aside, I will. But she hasn’t said anything yet, so I’m not going anywhere.”
It didn’t matter to Leonard what they thought. He knew exactly what Baron and his brother wanted: to force him out, to get him out of the way as soon as possible. But their efforts were pointless. From the very beginning, they’d never truly cared about Grandma Murphy. All they ever wanted was control of the company.
“Leonard, don’t act so high and mighty in front of me,” Baron sneered. “You’ve been eating our food and living off our family since you were a kid, and I never made a fuss about it. And don’t get me started on your mother—after what she did, I took the blame for years and never once said a word to you.”
“If I were you, I’d have the decency to walk away and give up my salary. No matter what Grandma says, I’d never keep freeloading from this family. The nerve—you and your mother just keep pushing your luck!”
He was done with this conversation. All he wanted was to get Marguerite Taylor out of there.
Marguerite stood by, watching Leonard hold his own against the two brothers. Her heart ached for him, but she was at a loss—this was his family, not hers, and even though they were engaged, she didn’t know what to say or how to help.
No wonder Leonard had grown up so guarded and cold. With a family like this, it was the only way to survive.
