Mrs. Murphy knew that everything Marguerite and Leonard had done was truly for her own good, and the warmth in her heart was hard to put into words.
Both of them had gone to great lengths for her sake; there was nothing more they could possibly do, and having them by her side made her feel incredibly blessed.
“Grandma, I understand how you’re feeling right now, and I know exactly what’s on your mind. Leonard really has done so much for you, but I think he’s still hoping you’ll agree to the surgery. Maybe don’t turn him down so quickly, okay? I won’t tell him about this conversation today—it’ll just be between you and me. Take a couple of days and really think it over. If, after two days, you’re still sure about your decision, then let me know, and I’ll talk to him. How does that sound?”
Marguerite truly wanted Grandma to give it some careful thought, and she hoped Mrs. Murphy would accept the surgery, since it was all for her well-being.
“All right, I’ll listen to you,” Mrs. Murphy replied with a gentle smile. “Having such a kind and thoughtful granddaughter-in-law is a real blessing. The fact that you and Leonard care so much about me—it makes me happier than you could ever know.”
Thinking about how much Marguerite and Leonard cared for her, Mrs. Murphy couldn’t help but compare them to her own two sons. The difference stung; if her sons had shown her even a fraction of this kindness, things might have turned out very differently.
“Has Leonard been very busy these last few days?” she asked, her tone full of concern. “Have those two—well, you know who I mean—given him any trouble? If anything like that happens, you must tell me. And if there’s ever a problem you two can’t handle, promise me you’ll let me know.”
Marguerite genuinely cherished her time with Mrs. Murphy. Spending an afternoon chatting with her always brought some new insight or wisdom.
It was late in the evening by the time Marguerite finally returned home.
As soon as Leonard saw her walk in, he asked, “Did you visit Grandma today? Did you talk to her about the surgery? Has she agreed? If she has, I’ll call the doctor right away.”
