“All right, just wait for me to come back. I’ll take care of everything for you. There’s no need for you to keep living like this anymore. You haven’t truly been happy for a long time, and you’re not yourself these days.”
Marguerite had noticed all of this for a while, and she felt guilty about it.
Even if the two of them couldn’t end up together, they’d become friends now, and she was determined to help until the end.
“Okay.”
Hannah didn’t really know why she agreed to leave with Marguerite so easily, almost as if she trusted her completely—even though she wasn’t sure she understood her own feelings.
The truth was, she’d been lost for a long time, uncertain about this whole relationship. Maybe she only tagged along because the thought of that man still lingered in her heart. But now that she was here, there was no point in second-guessing herself any longer.
On the way back, Marguerite called Hogan and let him know what had happened.
“I’ll be here, waiting for you!” Hogan hadn’t expected his sister to pull this off, to actually convince Hannah to return. Most of all, he finally had the chance to see Hannah again.
He knew better than anyone how difficult it had been to get to this point. He was determined not to let this chance slip away.
“It isn’t your fault,” Hannah said softly. “It’s mine.”
“If we were still together, maybe I could finally let go of the past. But I can’t promise I’d be able to look at you every day the same way as before. I need some time. Honestly, you can let me go—after everything that’s happened, it hardly seems fair to you.”
“I made up my mind to leave you a long time ago. I just couldn’t face you anymore, or my own memories. Every time I see you, I’m reminded of things I’d rather forget. I was ready to give up. But I never expected you’d come looking for me. When you did… I wavered. The truth is, I haven’t been happy lately, either.”
With everything laid bare between them, there was no point in pretending anymore. For the first time, they both spoke honestly, saying what was truly in their hearts.
