“I knew Grandma wouldn’t agree to it. Honestly, the surgery isn’t as risky as it used to be—it’s just a minimally invasive procedure. But she really is getting on in years… I’ll have to think this over again.”
The truth was, he simply couldn’t bring himself to give up on this. He saw how much pain Grandma was in every day, and it tore at him. She was already so old; why should she have to suffer through such agony, struggling to breathe or clutching her chest in discomfort? He witnessed all of it, and to him, Grandma was the dearest family he had left. How could he let things get to this point?
“I’ll leave everything with Grandma to you for now. If you need anything from me, please let me know,” she said softly. “I want her to have the surgery too—after all, it might actually help her get better. But we do need to respect how she feels, and try to see things from her perspective.”
Her words were gentle but honest, revealing her true feelings to him. The truth was, Grandma wasn’t only their responsibility—his father and Aaron were here too. The decision about surgery would need everyone’s agreement; after all, they were all by Grandma’s side now, and if things went on like this, their relationships would only grow more strained.
Everything that needed to be said had been said, and neither of them continued the conversation.
Marguerite got ready to head back to the office to take care of some work, then hung up the phone.
But she’d barely put the phone down when it rang again.
She glanced at the screen—Laura Wood was calling.
“Ms. Taylor, I’ve just heard that Mr. Zade’s been hospitalized. Apparently, he even had surgery. Why don’t we go visit him together?”
Laura’s voice was urgent and full of concern.
When they arrived at the hospital, they headed straight to Luke Zade’s room. He was lying in bed hooked up to an IV, looking pale and worn out.
“Luke, what happened? Something this serious, and you didn’t even think to call me? What’s going on?”
“A few days ago, I was out at a business dinner, drank a bit too much, and ended up breaking my leg—dislocated it, too,” Luke explained with a weary shrug. “I had to have major surgery and I still can’t be discharged. The doctors say it’ll be at least another week. But it’s really nothing, and I know you’ve been busy lately, so I didn’t want to trouble you.”
He sounded resigned, and honestly, it was just one stroke of bad luck after another.
